Gyeongsangbuk-do and Pohang City held a forum at the National Assembly to discuss ways to foster Pohang Yeongilman Port as a base port in preparation for the commercialization of the Arctic route.

The Arctic route is about 7,000km shorter than the route from Korea to Europe via the Indian Ocean and Suez Canal, so the flight time can be reduced from 40 to 30 days.

Pohang City explained that it is necessary to preemptively respond by creating Yeongil Bay Port as a base port as the use of the Arctic route is expected to increase due to climate warming.
