Korea, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the IAEA held the 13th high-level policy consultation meeting in Seoul to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in the IAEA's preparation for verification of North Korea's nuclear weapons, assessment of the implementation of safety measures in Korea, and the current status of the IAEA's safety measures.

Kwon Ki-hwan, Global Multilateral Diplomatic Coordinator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the meeting held detailed discussions on ways to strengthen cooperation in the field of safety measures and that he expects the two sides to continue communicating on major activities related to the IAEA's safety measures, including verification of North Korea's nuclear weapons.

Mashimo Afaro, the IAEA's Deputy Secretary-General for Safety Measures, explained that the IAEA is thoroughly prepared to verify North Korea's nuclear weapons program and evaluated that the IAEA's implementation of safety measures for peaceful nuclear activities in South Korea is being carried out smoothly.

The Korea-IAEA High-Level Policy Council is a strategic communication channel for discussing issues related to safety measures and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two sides, which are key areas of the IAEA, and has been held annually since 2013.
