At the end of last month, massive protests erupted in Spain, where heavy flooding killed more than 200 people, condemning the authorities for their poor response.

More than 100,000 angry protesters threw mud and called for the resignation of those responsible, and some clashed with police.

I'm reporter Jeong Yu-shin on the report.

Angry citizens poured out of downtown Valencia Square in eastern Spain.

This is to hold accountable for the failure to respond to the massive flood disaster, which has killed over 200 people.

Participants paid tribute by placing flowers next to mud-stained boots symbolizing the dead victim.

[Sarah Sanchez Gurillo / bereaved family of flood victims: The car was swept away and washed away. No one told me to evacuate. It's a shame. Those responsible should step down.]

Protesters called on Gov. Carlos Mason to step down immediately, calling him a killer.

He also flocked to the city hall building, threw mud, and left a handprint indicating the victim.

Towards the end of the protest, some participants threw chairs and clashed with police as they tried to enter the city hall.

Riot police wielded shields and batons to forcibly suppress them, and some protesters were arrested.

Flooding that hit southeastern Spain on the 29th of last month has killed 220 people so far, with most of the deaths coming from Valencia.

A year's worth of heavy rain fell for eight hours, but it was 12 hours after the emergency evacuation disaster text was sent.

In response to a rare large-scale flood disaster in developed countries, local media point to the authorities' poor response every day.

[Rafael Vidal / Protestant: The Governor is gone from the beginning. No one knows where it was. I think it's completely incompetent, with so many lies on the line.

Spain's King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Sanchez, who had previously visited the affected area, were also mucked by angry residents.

In addition to Valencia, protests have since spread in other large cities such as the capital Madrid and Alicante, foreign media said.
