"I am pleased to announce that Tom Hogan, a former ICE director and strong proponent of border control, will join the Trump administration in a position overseeing the border," Trump said on social media Truth Social.
It is the second time that a new senior administration official has publicly announced the selection, following the appointment of Suzy Wiles, co-chairman of the campaign committee, as White House chief of staff.
Analysts say the importance of Trump's immigration policy is seen in that he announced the "border tsar" earlier than other ministers.
"Horman will be responsible for border issues, including both the South-North border and maritime and air security," Trump said, adding, "I've known him for a long time, and no one is better suited to control and monitor the border."
"Tom Homan will also oversee the deportation of all illegal aliens to their countries," he continued, adding, "Congratulations to Tom, and I believe he will do this tremendously well."
However, it is not known exactly what duties Trump's mentioned "border tsar" will take.
As Trump has vowed to cut off the flow of people crossing the U.S. border from Mexico, the border tsar is expected to be in charge of relevant agencies and departments in the federal government for strong border controls and crackdowns on illegal immigrants.
