Kyodo News reported that South Korea, the United States and Japan are coordinating ways to hold the three-nation summit in time for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and APEC summit to be held in Peru from the 15th to the 16th.

Kyodo News explained the background of the meeting, saying, "The purpose is to confirm the importance of the trilateral cooperation that former President Donald Trump, who won the U.S. presidential election, has been pushing for since the inauguration of the Biden administration in that he can ignore the framework of multilateral cooperation."

If formal talks take place, the leaders of the three countries will meet for the first time since meeting at Camp David, the presidential residence near Washington, DC, in August last year.

At the time, the leaders of the three countries agreed to hold an annual summit at least once a year.
