Italian police said on the 11th local time that they had arrested 38 members of the art forgery on charges of deceiving the forgery as genuine and trying to distribute it on the market.
In addition to Picasso, Banksy, and Andy Warhol, the forgery seized by the police amounted to more than 2,500 works by several famous artists, including Klimt, Modigliani, and Kandinsky, and was found in Europe, including Italy, France, and Spain.
Police estimated that if these counterfeits were actually distributed, economic damage would have reached 200 million euros and 300 billion won in our money.
Some Italian auction houses were also found to have participated in the production of counterfeit goods, such as issuing fake guarantees.
Italian police launched the investigation last year after discovering more than 200 fake artworks while searching the home of a businessman in Pisa.
