The New York Times reported on the 13th local time that Special Counsel Smith is planning to resign after completing his work before Trump returns to the White House in January next year.
On the 8th, Special Counsel Smith asked the court to suspend the proceedings for a month, saying he needed time to close the case involving Trump.
Earlier in August last year, Special Prosecutor Smith indicted former President Trump on charges of taking out confidential documents during his first term in office and disobeying the 2020 presidential election.
Trump was the former president at the time of his indictment, but the victory in the presidential election has effectively foreshadowed the end of the case in accordance with the Justice Department's custom of not prosecuting the incumbent president.
In the meantime, Trump has warned that he will dismiss Smith in "two seconds" if he wins the presidential election, claiming that the prosecution of the special counsel is a political repression.
The New York Times said it was also interested in whether the case report, which will be written by Smith on the sidelines of the closing of the case, would be released to the public.
