Three out of four diabetic patients fail to control their numbers due to smoking and obesity.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said that men have 1.3 times higher levels of glycated hemoglobin than non-smokers, and women have 1.4 times higher levels of obesity than normal weight.

He also explained that carbohydrate intake is also a major factor that hinders diabetes control.

The prevalence of diabetes among adults over the age of 30 in Korea reached 6 million with 16.3% in 2021, and more than half of all adults need to be managed, including the pre-diabetes stage.

Diabetes awareness and treatment rates are gradually improving to 67.2% and 63%, respectively, but the control rate among diabetic patients remains stagnant at 24.4%.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that lacks insulin secretion or does not function normally, and if not managed, it can cause various complications such as stroke or myocardial infarction or lead to death.
