In the future, if a car accident occurs, drivers and others will be able to secure related records directly without going through a car manufacturer.

In addition, there is a legal basis for insurers to discount insurance premiums by attaching black boxes that illuminate car pedals on vehicles.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the revision of the Automobile Management Act and the Automobile Damage Compensation Guarantee Act, which contain related information, passed the National Assembly plenary session today (14th).

The revision of the Automobile Management Act calls for anyone to purchase accident recording devices and accident record extraction equipment that can read information recorded in EDR.The amendment to the

Act takes effect one year after the promulgation, and after the enforcement of the Act, anyone can purchase EDR equipment and extract accident records.

In addition, the amendment to the Automobile Damage Compensation Guarantee Act included the addition of a "record device for identifying the cause of the accident" such as a pedal black box to a device that allows the government to recommend a discount on premiums to insurance companies for installed vehicles.

The law is intended to ease public anxiety over a recent series of suspected sudden acceleration, including a reverse driving traffic accident near Seoul City Hall that killed nine people in July, the ministry explained. The amendment to the

Act will take effect six months after the promulgation.
