The Korean Political Association decided on Chung Eui-hwa, the former chairman of the National Assembly, as the winner of this year's National Leader Award.

The National Leader Award Selection Committee said that Chung's leadership is an example in that he has followed the principles of parliamentary democracy without being bound by the party he came from as the chairman of the National Assembly.

Former Chairman Chung explained the reason for the selection, saying that he kept his independent role in the conflict between the ruling and opposition parties when he was the 19th National Assembly chairman, and that he had actively played a role as a mediator by rejecting Cheong Wa Dae's demand for an official settlement and meeting with the leaders of the ruling and opposition parties in person to reach a compromise.

The National Leader Award was established to honor the leader who contributed to the construction of today's Korea by presenting a social vision and uniting the people amid the uncertain situation facing Korea.
