Pope Francis says an international investigation is needed to determine whether Israel's attack on Gaza amounts to "genocide," meaning genocide.

"Some experts say what's happening in Gaza has the characteristics of genocide," the pope said, according to an excerpt from the upcoming pope's new book by Italian daily Rastampa on the 17th local time.

The pope also urged that "we must carefully investigate whether it conforms to the technical definition of genocide formulated by legal scholars and international organizations."

This is the first time Pope Francis has publicly stated that the international community should investigate whether Israel's military operation in Gaza amounts to genocide against Palestinians.

Pope Francis, who has called for a cease-fire in the Gaza war, recently criticized Israel's retribution against Hamas and Hezbollah, saying it was excessive.

Reuters, citing a Rastampa report, called the pope's "most outspoken" criticism of Israel.

Reuters has reached out to Israel's foreign ministry for comment regarding the pope's remarks but has not yet received a response.
