Agricultural reservoirs made for water supply purposes have weak flood control capabilities.

As extreme downpours are frequent due to the climate crisis, it is expected that it will be of great help in preventing disasters by creating facilities that apply new methods to old reservoirs.

I'm reporter Oh Sun-yeol.

It is Yeonggwang Bulgap Reservoir, which was built as the largest reservoir in Gwangju and Jeonnam in 1926.

It is a glorious lifeline that supplies water to 3,200 hectares of agricultural land.

Yeonggwang Bulgap Reservoir was diagnosed as urgent to take reinforcement measures due to problems such as the levee's surplus and the overflow of waterproofing roads in 2013.

The Korea Rural Community Corporation has created a drainage facility using a new method to expand its dimensional capacity.

It is also called 'Piano Key Water Num' because it resembles a piano keyboard, and it is the first time in Korea that this method has been used.

Compared to straight drainage facilities of the same size, the area in contact with water is wide, so the discharge capacity is about three times better.

[Lee Byung-ho / President of Korea Rural Community Corporation: By developing water overflow, emergency floodgate and emergency response plans, we can more effectively respond to disasters such as extreme floods and extreme droughts and ensure the lives and safety of our people]

Accordingly, it is expected that maintenance will be possible without opening the floodgates up to 200 years in frequency.

As the stability of the reservoir has been secured, Yeonggwang-gun plans to expand convenience facilities for residents and tourists along with maintenance work.

[Jang Seil / Yeonggwang-gun County, Jeonnam: A tourist cluster will be built based on the beautiful natural environment to create a water leisure experience and rest area for visitors to enjoy water skiing, waterfront parks, and walking.]

The Korea Rural Community Corporation plans to select 26 small and medium-sized reservoirs nationwide that need to secure disaster response capabilities and continue the project to expand the capacity of the water.
