A four-legged robot developed by domestic researchers has succeeded in completing the full marathon course for the first time in the world.

It can run more than twice as long as before and can move quickly in any environment, such as cement floors or sandy beaches, so it is expected to be used in dangerous sites where people go, such as accident sites.

Reporter Lim Null-sol reports.

Marathon held in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province.

Four-legged robots are running together among many marathoners.

As a result of running silently without losing his own flow, he ran 42.195km in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 52 seconds and crossed the finish line.

The four-legged robot "Livo 2," developed by KAIST researchers, has succeeded in completing the full marathon for the first time in the world.

In this competition, in order to prevent accidents with people around them, the researcher ordered Rybo 2 to change direction with a wireless device.

In addition, the sensor on the ribo 2 joint detected the movement and minimized power consumption, which led to a stable run in the marathon course, where the hills were repeated.

In particular, it was able to store the kinetic energy generated from the downhill in the battery, so it could not stop even on the hill.

[Yum Dong-hoon / KAIST mechanical engineering Ph.D. student: (This technology) has developed and used a controller using a physical engine called Lysim developed in the lab. (Also) I attached elements that generated a lot of heat directly to the body. Through him, we designed a fanless quadruped walking robot by escaping heat to the torso.

Livo2 uses force and joint movement information received by the legs, so stable movement is possible regardless of topographic changes such as sand beaches or stairs.

The four-legged robot LIVO2 can carry your luggage up and down the stairs, making it convenient to deliver goods even where there is no elevator.

In addition, it used to be only 20km on a single charge, but this time, it increases the battery capacity by 33% so that you can run up to 67km if you run in a straight line on flat land.

[Hwang Bo Jemin / KAIST Professor of Mechanical Engineering: We increased the battery capacity from 550Wh to 1,400Wh. (So) If it used to be possible to work 3-4km, we can send robots from 20km away.]

Livo2 confirmed that this marathon completion will allow you to perform tasks such as delivering and patrolling in urban settings.

In the future, the researchers plan to increase walking performance so that it can be used for night watch, roughland patrol, and aid delivery.
