A homeless man in his 50s wielded a weapon against citizens in the middle of Manhattan, New York, killing two people and seriously injuring one.

New York police held an emergency meeting and said they have arrested a 51-year-old Hispanic male suspect for murder and are investigating.

Police said the suspect killed a Hispanic man in his 30s and an Asian man in his 60s by wielding a weapon at the 19th Street construction site in Manhattan and along the East River on the morning of the 18th local time.

The suspect also attacked a black woman in her 30s on a road near the U.N. headquarters on 42nd Street in Manhattan and is in critical condition, police said.

New York police said the suspect was identified as a homeless man with mental health problems with eight previous convictions.

New York Police Detective Chief Joseph Kenny said the incident appeared to be an "unquestionable attack" and that the suspect simply approached the victims and began the attack with a weapon.
