The Financial Supervisory Service cautioned that in the first half of this year, the amount of illegal use of credit cards overseas reached 1,198 cases and 1.66 billion won, of which nearly 90% of the total was illegal due to theft and loss.
In particular, as overseas travel is expected to increase ahead of the year-end and New Year holidays, it issued a consumer warning, saying it is concerned about damage to illegal card use due to pickpockets and carelessness at tourist destinations.
The Financial Supervisory Service also advised that by applying for a safe overseas use setting service before departure, setting the country of card use, the amount of one-time use, and the period of use can prevent unwanted overseas payments.
In addition, he urged people to refrain from using overseas private ATMs, which are feared to steal card information, and to cover the keyboard to prevent exposure when entering passwords.
