50s die during demolition of Geomdan apartment building in 'parking lot collapse'

An excavator driver who was working on internal demolition died at an apartment construction site in Geomdan New City, Incheon, where an underground parking lot collapsed during new construction last year and the construction company was suspended.

Police believe the excavator collapsed while climbing the emergency stairs and plan to investigate whether there were any problems with compliance with safety rules and supervision of management.

The Central Regional Employment and Labor Administration is also looking into whether it violated the Serious Accident Punishment Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act at the site.

Earlier in April last year, the upper slab of the underground parking lot collapsed in this apartment due to the omission of rebar.
