Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was convicted in the first trial of violating the Public Official Election Act, submitted an appeal to the court.

The prosecution will also appeal soon, so the court battle that will determine Lee's political fate is expected to continue in the second trial.

Reporter Kim Da-hyun reports.

Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced his appeal shortly after he was sentenced to one year in prison and two years of probation for violating the Public Official Election Act.

[Lee Jae-myung / Minjoo Party leader (last 15th): Today's scene will also be a scene in modern Korean history. You will be appealing. It's a conclusion that's hard to accept from basic factual recognition.

After reviewing the ruling, the representative submitted an appeal to the court a day before the deadline expired.

As the prosecution demanded a two-year prison sentence for representative Lee, it is expected to receive an appeal soon.

Earlier, CEO Lee was put on trial on charges of making false statements by saying, "I didn't know the late Kim Moon-ki when he was mayor of Seongnam" or "I never played golf together" when he was a presidential candidate.

In the same year, he is also accused of making false statements at a parliamentary audit in Gyeonggi Province to the effect that he changed the use of the Baekhyun-dong site under pressure from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Lee denied the charges, but the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Lee to one year in prison and two years of probation on the 15th.

If the ruling is confirmed, Lee will lose his parliamentary seat and be disenfranchised for the next 10 years.

As representative Lee filed an appeal first, the court battle to determine political fate entered the second round.
