Jeon Cheong-jo, who is suspected of stealing 3.5 billion won in investment by posing as a chaebol extramarital and wealthy man, was sentenced to 13 years in prison at the appeal trial.
Jeon is accused of not only fraud, but also of assaulting the nephew of Nam Hyun-hee, a former national fencing team member, several times, and all of them were sentenced to 16 years in prison in the first trial.
The court explained that there is a high risk of recidivism because Jeon has a bad criminal method, such as pretending to be a chaebol and deceiving gender, and committed a crime even though he has a history of fraud.
He also explained that some of the 35 victims suffered serious damage, but they are not recovering at all.
He stressed that prison sentences are inevitable even to prevent copycat crimes.
However, the court sentenced Jeon to 13 years in prison, saying that Jeon cooperated in the investigation and there are factors of reduction, such as submitting a letter of apology.
In addition, Lee, who was accused of aiding and abetting Jeon's fraud, was sentenced to two years in prison, heavier than the original trial for one and a half years.
The court judged that Lee had been acting as Jeon's secretary since April last year, and that the duration of the crime was longer than that of the original trial.
