A researcher who siphoned off key technologies while working at Samsung Display and handed them over to a Chinese company has been put on trial.

The technology passed by the researcher was found to have solved the 10-year gap between China and us at once.

Reporter Shin Gwi-hye reports.

Back in March 2021, Samsung Display sold its factory in China to a Chinese company when it withdrew from its LCD business.

In this process, Samsung delivered only basic manufacturing facilities and automation technology, and did not pass over trade secrets such as technology necessary for quality control.

However, A, in his 50s, who was a senior researcher at Samsung Display at the time, took 17 photos of trade secret materials and moved to the Chinese company shortly after.

The data taken secretly by Mr. A is worth 240 billion won in terms of money, and it was enough to bridge the technology gap with China for up to 10 years.

Mr. A had been discussing a job change with a Chinese company even before the crime, and he carried out the entire process in secret so that this fact would not be known.

Mr. A was in charge of developing and building automation technology with the data he took with him.

They directly transmitted the technology they took out to executives and employees, or translated it into Chinese and provided it.

When the prosecution began the investigation in earnest, A informed the company of the investigation and was also promised the cost of a lawyer.

Earlier in July, another researcher who leaked Samsung Display's core manufacturing technology was sentenced to six years in prison for violating the Unfair Competition Prevention Act in the first trial.
