In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Republican lawmakers should "kill" the bill, meaning it should be voted down or prevented from being voted on.
The legislation Trump opposed included preventing the government from forcing reporters to disclose information providers and seizing information, including digital data, without reporters being aware of it.
The bill was approved with bipartisan support in the House of Representatives, and has not passed the Senate Judiciary Committee for months, although it is now backed by some Republicans in the Democratic-majority Senate.
CNN reports that Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican, is said to be blocking the bill's process.
