Former Congressman Matt Gates, nominated by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as attorney general, has resigned.

In a post on social media X on the 21st local time, Gates expressed his intention to resign, saying, "It is clear that my confirmation is unfairly interfering with the important task of taking over the Trump regime."

"I will withdraw my name from the consideration of the attorney general because there is no time to waste unnecessarily while dragging my wrangling for a long time in politics," he said. "Trump's Justice Department should be ready from the first day of his inauguration."

After Trump's nomination, former lawmaker Gates has been criticized not only by the Democratic Party but also by the same Republican Party as allegations of sexual purchase of minors have been raised in the past.
