The New York Times (NYT) introduced how the Plymouth-Canton Ballet, based in Canton, Michigan, managed to perform the Nutcracker.
The ballet company, which has performed The Nutcracker every year for 39 years until last year, had scheduled a two-day performance from December 7 this year, but was in a dizzying situation on the 17th.
The trailer that stored various items in the nutcracker, such as a stage Christmas tree, a hanging clock, and a throne, was stolen.
The ballet company is a non-profit educational organization consisting of students who are not professional dancers, and 80 students enrolled in 20 nearby ballet academies belong to the ballet company.
There are also students who come from far-flung areas over 60km for practice.
June Smith, 64, the ballet's artistic director, has led the organization since her mother, the founder of the ballet company, in 1984.Smith, the mother of a child aged
, took the ballet stage 19 years ago, shortly after giving birth to her youngest son.
Smith's youngest son will star in The Nutcracker this year, and his grandchildren will also take the stage in supporting roles.
Smith performed The Nutcracker every year because of his love for ballet, but it was difficult to buy new props worth thousands of dollars due to lack of budget.
However, Smith didn't give up, and after making a list of stolen props, he recruited volunteers and started making new props.
The situation changed dramatically when the local media reported this and the parents of a student informed the online fundraising site GoFundMe about the situation.
The NYT reported that the Nutcracker could be put on the year-end stage for 40 consecutive years as $14,000 and about 19.6 million won were collected in an instant.
"I'm so proud of my neighbors," Smith said, adding, "I'm going to make the performance a success."
