Residents of Guryong Village in Gaepo-dong, Seoul, who are about to redevelop, staged a protest asking for a certificate of residence confirmation.

After Gangnam-gu refused to issue a resident confirmation letter the day before (22nd), residents have been confronting the police by installing a watchtower at the entrance of the village since around 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

Police and fire departments are deploying personnel to prepare for emergencies.

Gaepo Guryong Village is a shanty village formed by demolition residents who were forced out ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and was designated as an urban development zone in 2016 when SH Corporation became the project implementer.

As a result, residents are demanding the right to sell, and under the current law, even unauthorized buildings can be given the right to sell if they are identified as owners and real residents before January 24, 1989, but they are in conflict because it is difficult to prove the relevant facts.
