U.S. defense emphasizes diplomatic solution in Lebanon to Israel

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has stressed the need for a diplomatic solution to Israel over the ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Austin said in a phone call with Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz that it is important to ensure the safety and security of Lebanese troops and peacekeepers in Lebanon.

It also reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Israeli security by reviewing regional threats and discussing Israel's ongoing military operations.

At the same time, he urged the Israeli government to continue taking steps to improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Israel and Lebanese militant Hezbollah are negotiating a cease-fire to stop fighting for 60 days under U.S. mediation.
