Heavy penalties have been imposed on KBS and KTV, which have been controversial for misleading Hangul subtitles while broadcasting the celebration performance on Hangul Day.

The Korea Communications Standards Commission held a general meeting today (25th) and voted for the second highest level of "related disciplinary action" against KBS and KTV among legal sanctions.

Earlier on October 9, KBS 1TV and KTV misrepresented "kiyeok" as "memory" and "dead" as "dead" in subtitles while broadcasting the Hangeul Day celebration.

Broadcasting company officials who attended the opinion statement explained the background of the accident, saying that the event planner sent the wrong script and the revised version was not properly shared.

Kim Jung-soo said that legal sanctions are inevitable as KBS turned on the opera "Madame Butterfly," which features Kimigayo and Kimono costumes on National Liberation Day, and another accident occurred in two months.

Chairman Ryu Hee-rim also expressed his opinion on disciplinary action by KBS, which oversees the Korean language proficiency test, saying that elementary school students made a mistake in subtitles that did not make mistakes.
