The Ministry of National Defense said today that it has promoted Maj. Gen. Ju Il-seok, the 1st Marine Division commander, to lieutenant general and appointed him as Marine commander in the second half of this year, replacing Kim Kye-hwan.

Kim Kye-hwan, the commander of the Marine Corps, who took office in December 2022, was on the list of investigators for the death of a corporal in July last year, and was mentioned as an early replacement, but he usually finished his two-year term.

In addition, the Ministry of National Defense also promoted Navy Maj. Gen. Kang Jung-ho and Air Force Maj. Gen. Park Ki-wan to lieutenant commander and Air Force deputy chief of staff, respectively.

The Ministry of National Defense said it selected the best professionals in each field to realize peace by force with overwhelming military readiness, considering North Korea's nuclear and missile threats and the severe situation in Europe and the Middle East.
