A preliminary evaluation shows that the capital fortress of Hanyang can meet the universal value of being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites, a UNESCO advisory organization, evaluated that the fortress surrounding Hanyang, the capital of Joseon, can meet universal values and authenticity according to the World Heritage List criteria.

In particular, the committee recommended that management and protection measures should be prepared along with additional research on the fortresses of Hanyang.

According to the committee's recommendation, the National Heritage Administration will proceed with domestic procedures for the registration of World Heritage sites, including additional research and management measures for Hanyang Fortress with local governments such as the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

The preliminary evaluation of World Heritage sites is an important step to examine the possibility of listing as a heritage site in advance through document review by an advisory body prior to UNESCO registration.
