Yun Sung-deok, Korean Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, was elected president of the General Assembly at the 115th International Organization for Migration, IOM, held in Geneva, Switzerland.

It is the first time that South Korea has taken the chairmanship of the General Assembly, the top decision-making body of the IOM, and the term is due next year.

Ambassador Yoon said in his acceptance remarks, "International cooperation on migration and forced evacuation is more important than ever due to the recent surge in climate change impacts and armed conflicts," adding that he expects Korea's leadership and role as a global hub to be greatly strengthened.

Our government has been working with the IOM to resolve humanitarian crises in Asia-Pacific and Africa, and in April, Lee Seong-ah, deputy secretary-general of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), was appointed to the position of deputy secretary-general for operational reform of the IOM.
