With the automobile-related industry accounting for a large portion of Mexico's exports to the U.S., it was analyzed that the top three automakers operating factories in Mexico were all U.S. brands.
According to statistics collected by Mexico's Ministry of Economy and others and released online, exports of automobile and auto parts to the U.S. amounted to $130 billion (181 trillion won) last year, nearly 27% of the total.
Mexico produces 3.8 million cars a year, more than 90% for export, 80% of which go to the United States.
In the meantime, when looking at sales by company last year, the top 1 to 3 were all American brands.
General Motors topped the list with $28 billion worth of sales.
It was followed by Stellantis ($22 billion) and Ford ($16 billion), which were created by a merger between the U.S.-Italian joint venture Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA.
As a result, if automobile-related items are included in the U.S. tariff on Mexico, U.S. companies will be directly hit.
All U.S. automakers have production facilities in the Central Industrial Complex, which has a seamless connection to the border area with the U.S. or surrounding ports. The U.S. was the destination for 90% of finished cars exported from Mexico between January and July this year, according to
Reuters, with GM (354,723 vehicles) and Ford (195,595 vehicles) ranking first and second in terms of number of vehicles.
Toyota (Japan), Nissan (Japan), Volkswagen (Germany), Kia (Korea), Audi (Germany), and Honda (Japan) are among the top sales figures last year.
In the auto parts industry, NEMARK (Mexico), Magna International (Canada), Continental (Germany), and Rear Corporation (US) ranked 1st to 4th in terms of sales.
