Russia said on the 27th local time that if the U.S. deploys missiles to Japan, this threatens Russia's security and will take countermeasures.

Earlier on the 24th, Japan's Kyodo News reported, citing diplomatic sources, that Japan and the United States plan to deploy missiles and use them as military bases in case of Taiwan emergency.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakharova has accused Japan of escalating the situation around Taiwan to justify expanding military ties with the United States.

"If U.S. intermediate-range missiles are deployed on Japanese territory, it will pose a real threat to Russian security, and Russia has repeatedly warned Japan that it will have no choice but to take appropriate measures necessary to strengthen its defense capabilities," he said.

He said Russia would know what would accompany such a move if it read the revised nuclear doctrine announced last week.

Earlier on the 25th, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that if the United States deploys medium and short-range missiles in Asia, Russia will also consider deploying them in Asia.
