Average household income increased in the third quarter of this year, but the distribution index worsened for the second quarter as high-income earners rose sharply.

The average monthly income per household came to 5.255 million won in the third quarter, up 4.4 percent from a year earlier, according to the results of the third-quarter household trend survey released by Statistics Korea.

It is the largest increase since 4.7% in the first quarter of last year and has been on the rise for the last five consecutive quarters.

Real income, reflecting prices, increased by 2.3%.By income quintile

, the average monthly income of the top 20% households in the quintile increased by 6.5% to KRW 11.54 million. The income of the bottom 20% of households in the

income bracket increased 5.4% to 1,182,000 won.

The quintile of equalized disposable income divided by the income of the top 20% by the income of the bottom 20% was 5.69 times.

The quintile ratio rose 0.14 times from the third quarter of last year, which can be interpreted as a widening income gap between low- and high-income households.

However, the government explained that it is difficult to say that the level of change in the quintile scale is significant because it is within the confidence interval, and that the distribution situation can be accurately confirmed through the results of the annual household financial welfare survey.
