U.S. Democrats submit bill to prevent abuse of presidential tariffs

With U.S. President-elect Donald Trump saying he will impose high tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China upon taking office in January next year, the U.S. Democratic Party has issued a bill to ban unilateral tariffs by the president.

Democratic Representative Susan DelBene, along with Representative Don Byer, introduced a "bill to prevent abuse of tariffs" to the House of Representatives, according to the U.S. Congressional Legislative System.

The bill, joined by eight Democrats on the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee, removes tariffs and import quotas imposed on U.S. presidents under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

DelBene said the International Emergency Economic Powers Act is not a law that allows a president to impose tariffs indiscriminately, and that the "Tariff Abuse Prevention Act" is intended for Congress to limit emergency powers and perform necessary oversight functions before the president takes tariff measures that could increase the burden on the people.

However, the House of Representatives will soon end its term and will be newly formed and opened on January 3 next year, and the U.S. media predicts that the bill is unlikely to be passed by Congress because the Republican Party has a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
