Colombian prosecutors say they have put a kidnapper named Carlos Igita on trial on charges of sexually abusing or sexually assaulting a minor after kidnapping him on the 28th local time.
The accused Igita kidnapped the victim, who was 7 years old at the time, while working as a school bus driver in early 2012, and was later reported missing, but police could not find the girl's whereabouts.
Local prosecutors explained that Igita changed the child's name, moved from residence to Medellin and Beyo areas, took the victim with her, and was frequently sexually assaulted without going to school.
Colombian prosecutors said the suspect, Igita, is believed to have gaslighted the victim and made him believe everything was normal, adding that he had been detained until recently.
The victim later escaped around February of this year and reportedly stayed in a safe place until the suspect was arrested.
According to AFP, 139 cases of child sexual exploitation occurred between January and August, citing data from the city of Medellin.
