Incheon City has officially submitted an application to certify Baengnyeong Island and Daecheong Island Geoparks in Ongjin County as UNESCO World Geoparks.

UNESCO World Geopark is an area designated for the protection and special management of attractions and landscapes of high geological value, and as of April, 213 sites in 48 countries were certified.

Baengnyeong and Daecheong islands in the northernmost part of the West Sea were designated as national geological parks in July 2019 due to their large geological heritage and clues that could reveal the evolutionary process of the East Asian crust.

Incheon City has been internationally recognized for its geological, ecological, and cultural values of Baengnyeong Island and Daecheong Island and has been promoting the designation of a World Geopark to promote local economy and tourism.

Accordingly, we plan to continue to promote community cooperation activities with the goal of final approval in 2026 after screening by the International Federation of Geosciences (IUGS) and UNESCO evaluation teams next year.
