António Costa, the new president of the European Union (EU) summit, has argued that "peace cannot mean conditional surrender" in relation to the war in Ukraine.

In a speech at the inauguration ceremony held in Brussels, Belgium, on the 28th local time, Costa said that peace in Ukraine must be just, sustainable and based on international law.

Although he did not specify what peace means, it is interpreted as a different view from former U.S. President Donald Trump's idea of an early end to the war, which will come back to power in January next year.

Costa also stressed that unity is the lifeline of the EU and that only together can Europe's voice be heard around the world, vowing not only to build unity but also to respect the diversity of European countries.

The executive chairman, who is treated as an "EU summit" along with the executive chairman, plays a key role in drawing and mediating political decisions between the 27 countries at least four EU summits a year.

With regard to the EU's common foreign and defense policy, I represent an external position with the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security.
