OpenAI, which developed the generative artificial intelligence 'Chat GPT', has been sued for copyright infringement by five Canadian media companies.

Tosta and five Canadian media companies, including Post Media Network Canada, Globe and Mail and Canadian Press, have filed damages claims against OpenAI in the High Court in Ontario, Canada.

In a joint statement, they claimed OpenAI was collecting a large amount of content from Canadian media companies, violating their copyrights, and using it without compensation or permission to generate revenue.

Earlier in the United States, OpenAI, which is on trial after media outlets such as the New York Times filed similar lawsuits, did not respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

OpenAI has signed content usage agreements with News Corp, the world's largest media group with Wall Street Journal and others, as well as German media groups Axel Springer, AP, France's Le Monde and the Financial Times.
