Supreme Court "Reparations of 43 Billion to 800 Victims of May 18"

The Supreme Court has finally confirmed the ruling that the state should compensate about 43 billion won to 800 people, including people of merit and bereaved families of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

The Supreme Court decided without a hearing on the original case, which ruled that there was no reason for appeal in the original trial, which was partially won by 854 people of merit and bereaved families of the May 18 Democratic Movement against the state last month.

Earlier in May 2021, the Constitutional Court ruled Article 16 (2) of the May 18 Compensation Act unconstitutional on the grounds that the May 18 compensation paid in the past was only "physical damage," and people of merit and their families filed a lawsuit for mental damages against the state.

The first trial ruled that the state should pay 42.59 billion won to the plaintiff, and the second trial decided to pay a total of 43.65 billion won by calculating alimony for the arrest and detention of meritorious persons, disability level, and death separately.
