The ruling leftist Social Democratic Party is certain to win Romania's general election, which was held amid extreme right-wing gusts in the first round of last month's presidential election.

The ruling Social Democratic Party is in first place with 23.9% of the vote, Reuters reported, with 90% of the votes counted in Romania's general elections held on the 1st local time.

The far-right Romanian Alliance is followed by 17.9%, the center-right Liberal Party, which joined the Social Democrats' coalition, with 14.6% and the centrist Romanian Salvation Union with 11.1%.

The general election was held amid a recount of the first round of the presidential election held on the 24th of last month.

In the first round of the presidential election, far-right independent candidate Curlin Georgescu topped the list with 22.94% of the vote.

The ruling Social Democratic Party candidate failed to reach the final round in third place, with Elena Rasconi, the head of the Romanian Salvation Union, instead facing Georgescu in the final round with 19.18 percent of the vote.

Then, the Constitutional Court decided to recount the vote after objections from candidates from other parties, and the Constitutional Court's judgment on the results of the recount and the effectiveness of the election will be made public on the 2nd.

Regardless of the validity of the first round of the presidential election, if the current margin is not overturned in the general election, a coalition led by the Social Democratic Party will be formed to maintain the pro-EU policy line.
