Pro-Iranian militias support Syrian government forces

Iran and pro-Iranian forces have launched emergency support as the Syrian regime is on the verge of a rebel counterattack.

According to Reuters on the 2nd, a pro-Iranian militant group in Iraq crossed the Syrian border to support the regime led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Syrian military sources said Iranian-backed militias entered northern Syria from Iraq on the night of the 1st and began supporting Syrian government forces.

Dozens of fighters from the pro-Iran militant group Hashed al-Shabih also entered Syria via a corridor near the intersection of Abukamal, it added.

A source explained that those crossing the border were newly sent reinforcements to help 'combatants' on the northern front.

Syria's 14-year civil war, which has lasted since 2011, has been faltering recently as some rebels have taken back Aleppo, the second city in eight years.

Syrian government military sources said government forces were forced to quickly retreat from Aleppo because of a lack of troops.

So far, Iran has sent thousands of Shiite militias to support government forces to protect the Assad regime in Syria's civil war.

In particular, Hezbollah, an armed Lebanese faction, has been of great help to the Assad regime, but Hezbollah is currently considered to be unable to play its role because it has weakened significantly due to Israel's intensive attacks.

Iran's foreign ministry says its military advisers are stationed in Syria at the request of the Syrian government.
