According to AFP, massive violence broke out at a soccer game in Nzerecore, the second-largest city in southeastern Guinea, on the 1st.
Protests of discontent with the referee's ruling led to a deadly crush, Guinea's military government said in a statement, adding that the death toll was tentatively put at 56.
A doctor at the hospital where the casualties were transported told AFP news agency: "There are many bodies in the hospital. I'm lying on the floor of the hallway, and the morgue is full," he said.
The match was the final of a contest to commemorate the military chief Mamadi Dumbuya, who came to power in a military coup in September 2021.
