The U.N.'s highest court, the International Court of Justice and the ICJ, has begun a public hearing process to determine each country's legal obligations on climate change.

The hearing, which will take place over the next two weeks, will feature 99 countries and 12 international organizations, the largest number in ICJ history.

The hearing comes as Pacific island nations are facing a crisis due to rising sea levels.

Vanuatu's government, who attended the hearing, stated that the remedy under domestic law could not solve the climate crisis, leaving him in court.

The ICJ's judgment is only a legal recommendation, and even if it clarifies the legal responsibilities of developed countries, it cannot directly force action.

But countries are paying attention to the consequences because they could be the legal basis for other lawsuits related to the climate crisis, including domestic ones.
