UN "At least 44 civilians killed in Syrian civil war"

The United Nations says at least 44 civilians have been killed and nearly 50,000 displaced since the civil war intensified in northwest Syria since April 26.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a situation report that airstrikes, including shelling, continue to be reported in Syria's northwestern Idlib and northern Aleppo regions.The

report explained that more than 44 civilians were killed and at least 162 were injured in northwest Syria from the 26th of last month when the civil war began in earnest.

Twelve children and seven women were among the dead, and more than two-thirds of the injured were children and women, the report said.

In addition, the number of evacuees has soared, with more than 48,500 evacuees as of the 30th, compared to 14,000 on the 28th of last month.

The rebels, led by the northwestern Syrian-based Islamic militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have continued their advance by taking control of key Syrian strongholds late last month.

Syrian government forces, backed by Russia and Iran, have launched airstrikes against rebels in the central province of Hama.
