"The German people, who have been divided by barriers for decades, are thriving with the identity of one country," Obama said at a public meeting with Merkel in Washington, D.C., on the 2nd local time. "I hope the U.S. will do the same."
Although the American people are at odds according to their political orientation and ideology, the purpose is to overcome the differences by using the case of unification of East and West Germans as a lesson.
The public talks were organized as part of Merkel's commemorative event for the publication of her memoir.
During his time in office, Obama maintained close ties with Merkel on the international diplomatic stage, closely cooperating with her on a range of issues.
