A National Assembly resolution calling on President Yoon Suk Yeol to lift the emergency martial law passed the National Assembly plenary session a little while ago.
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik said the passage of the resolution nullified the declaration of emergency martial law and said he hoped the people would feel safe.
I'm connecting you with a reporter from the National Assembly.
Reporter Hong Min Gi! Please tell us about the current situation in the National Assembly.
[Reporter]
Yes, I'm currently in the National Assembly Communication Center.
First of all, around midnight, there was news that martial law forces attempted to enter the National Assembly's main office. Some members of
tried to enter by breaking the National Assembly window.
Aides from the ruling and opposition parties gathered at the main office blocked the entrance with National Assembly objects and resisted by making human bands.
As martial law forces continue to try to enter the plenary hall, the plenary session at 0:48 was considered.
Then, around 1 a.m., the agenda for lifting the emergency martial law was presented to the plenary session, and the agenda was passed in about a minute.
Of the 190 members, all 190 were in favor of it, and when the agenda was passed, lawmakers applauded and cheered. It's been about 2 hours and 30 minutes since President
Yoon declared emergency martial law.
Shortly after the resolution was passed, Chairman Woo said that the declaration of martial law was nullified.
President Yoon then immediately called for the emergency martial law to be lifted, and the military and police in the National Assembly's precinct to return to their seats immediately.
I added that the people also need to be relieved.
Currently, opposition lawmakers plan to wait in the plenary session until President Yoon officially lifts martial law.
Earlier, Chairman Woo and the ruling and opposition parties issued an emergency order to all lawmakers to gather at the National Assembly.
The ruling party held an emergency discussion of the leadership when representative Han Dong-hoon arrived at the plenary session of the National Assembly.Representative
was completely unaware of the announcement of the emergency martial law and expressed his position to correct the unconstitutional declaration of martial law.
Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, said in an emergency live broadcast that the National Assembly should vote to lift the emergency martial law, but he was very likely to use the military to arrest lawmakers.
As the main gate of the National Assembly was closed, lawmakers who could not enter the National Assembly gathered at the central headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul.
I'll get back to you with the details as soon as they come in.
I'm Hong Min Gi of YTN in the National Assembly.
