Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, who has overseen Indo-Pacific policy during the Biden administration, expressed grave concern about the situation in South Korea regarding the declaration of martial law and hoped for a peaceful resolution.

"We have grave concerns and are watching the development of the recent situation in South Korea," Campbell said ahead of a speech at the event in Washington, D.C., regarding next year's expo in Osaka, Japan.

He also said that he hopes and expects all political disputes in Korea to be resolved peacefully under the law.

Campbell said he was trying to contact South Korean officials at all levels in Washington and Seoul, and senior officials including Biden, his national security adviser and the secretary of state were being briefed on the situation in South Korea.

He added that he wanted to emphasize that the alliance with the Republic of Korea is ironclad and that the United States is on the side of South Korea in a time of uncertainty.

Reuters said President Yoon is a close ally with the United States, including a state visit to the United States last year at the invitation of President Biden and holding a global democracy summit initiated by the Biden administration in March.
