It is the first time in 45 years that martial law has been imposed in the history of the Republic of Korea since the martial law at the time of October 26, when former President Park Chung-hee was assassinated.
This emergency martial law was recorded as the 17th martial law since the inauguration of the South Korean government in 1948, and reporter Park Kwang-ryul summarized the contents.

The first martial law in constitutional history was declared by former President Rhee Syng-man in the wake of the Yeosu and Suncheon incidents in October 1948, more than two months after the establishment of the government.
It was in the name of preventing the armed conflict that took place when the 14th National Army refused to order the suppression of the Jeju April 3 incident.
Since then, the first nationwide martial law has been declared due to the Korean War, and martial law was also abused to prevent student protests during the April 19 Revolution.
The longest martial law in history was during the May 16 military coup, followed by a 12-day emergency martial law followed by a 558-day security martial law.
Former President Park Chung-hee also invoked martial law to respond to the June 3 Uprising against the Korea-Japan Agreement, the October Restoration, which calls for the presidential election system, and the Buma Uprising.
The most recent declaration of martial law was shortly after October 26 when former President Park was assassinated, which lasted 440 days until January 1981.
It caused great public outrage when it responded to the May 18 Gwangju democratization movement by putting martial law forces in place.
Since then, there has been no declaration of martial law for more than 40 years since the 16th martial law, as the current constitution, which was revised in 1987, has strengthened post-control by tightening the requirements for martial law to be invoked and allowing martial law to be lifted with the approval of a majority of the registered lawmakers.
