The U.K. weekly The Economist said the emergency martial law crisis "confused South Korea, questioned the future of President Yoon, and tested the power of South Korea's democracy."
In addition, President Yoon said, "I tried to save the regime, but I almost made my downfall clear," and observed, "If I don't resign myself, the National Assembly will impeach me."
The British daily Guardian also evaluated, "President Yoon's declaration of martial law seems to be a desperate gamble in the face of running out of popularity."
"President Yoon may have thought that at least some of the Korean political camp would respond to it," he said. "But the fact that the National Assembly, including the ruling party, unanimously reversed his declaration suggests that his calculation was wrong."
Foreign Policy, a U.S. media outlet, said, "President Yoon declared martial law in a special attempt to strengthen his power," adding, "However, the Korean National Assembly unanimously rejected it, and President Yoon's 'self-coup' ended in a humiliating failure."
