The life expectancy of a child born last year increased by 0.8 years from a year ago, the report showed.

The probability of death was highest in the order of cancer, pneumonia, and heart disease.

The National Statistical Office announced the 2023 Life Table, which contains these contents.

The life table is a statistic that estimates how long people of each age can live in the future if the current level of death by age is maintained.

Last year, the life expectancy of babies born was 83.5 years, up 0.8 years from a year ago.

By gender, men were 80.6 years and women were 86.4 years, up 0.7 years and 0.8 years from a year ago, respectively.

The life expectancy gap between men and women increased by 0.1 years to 5.9 years.

Compared to the OECD average, life expectancy for Korean men was 2.2 years higher for men and 2.8 years higher for women.

Last year, the probability of a child born to die of cancer was 19.1%, the highest among the causes of death.

Next, pneumonia and heart disease followed.

By gender, men were more likely to die in the order of cancer, pneumonia, and heart disease, while women were more likely to die in the order of cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia.
