Israel's defense minister has mentioned the possibility of a deal for the release of Palestinian militant Hamas hostages held in Gaza, local media said.

"There is a possibility that a new deal could be reached that would allow all hostages to be released, including those with U.S. citizenship," Israeli Gats, a defense official, said while speaking to U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, according to the Times of Israel.

The two ministers also discussed the situation in which Israeli forces moved beyond the northern Golan Heights into a buffer zone in Syrian territory after the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

"The two ministers agreed on the dangers of Iran and agreed to cooperate in preventing attempts to smuggle weapons from Iran into Lebanon through Syria," Israel's defence ministry added.

Katz's remarks are noteworthy because they came shortly after the schedule for U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's visit to Israel was announced.

Sullivan's trip to Israel could lead to a solution to the Gaza truce negotiations, which have been stalled for some time.

Hamas took 251 people hostage in a surprise attack on Israel on October 7 last year, some of whom were released or found dead, and 100 are still being held.
