This year's excavation of remains took place in 35 areas of the Korean War battleground, including Cheorwon, Gangwon-do, Inje, and Yeongcheon and Chilgok, Gyeongbuk, from March to early this month.
One of the 221 remains found will be identified as the late sergeant Park Gap-sung, who died in the battle of Nojeonpyeong, and will be buried at the Memorial on the 16th, while 220 will be placed in a remains storage center in the identification center and will go through identification processes such as gene comparison and analysis.
A total of 12,000 remains of South Korean soldiers have been recovered so far, of which 245 have been identified.
Prime Minister Han Deok-soo said, "The government will do its best to serve the last person in the arms of the family," adding, "We should not forget that the freedom, peace and prosperity we enjoy are due to their noble sacrifice."
